It is that time again! The dreaded cold and flu season. Are you prepared?

Don’t put your trust in the flu shot…the absolute best way to defeat the cold and flu this season is to have a stellar immune system.

Simple answer: Watch what you eat!

BONUS #2 – Best essential oils for cold and flu season

I happen to use Ancient Legacy Essential Oils, this is absolutely my favorite way to boost immunity and treat respiratory illnesses. Click here to visit the Youngevity Essential Oils Store.

For over all immune support:
Adults and kids 10+:
1st Defense Blend
To use: 2 or three drops in a diffuser for 15-30 minutes 3 times daily or in the morning rub 1 drop of oil on the soles of your feet. You may need to dilute in a carrier oil such as grapeseed or jojoba. I prefer coconut oil. link

Children 10 to 2:
To Be Well Blend
To use: dilute one drop in carrier oil and rub on the soles of feet daily or use 2-3 drops in a diffuser twice daily. link

Breathing and Resp. Support:
Adults: Choose one, blend a few or alternate the following:

  • Ravensara – can be used in diffuser, on soles of feet, or rubbed on the lung area
  • Eucalyptus Radiata – the most gentle Eucalyptus oil, diffuse, dilute in carrier oil and rub on soles of feet or make a bath soak with Dead Sea Salt.
  • Eucalyptus Globulous – strongest of the Eucalyptus oils, diffuse or use in a bath soak with Dead Sea Salt.
  • Peppermint – blends well with other oils in a diffuser or can be used alone
  • Breath of life blend- diffuse, or rub on soles of feet with carrier oil.

Children of all ages:

  • Ravensara – diffuse 2-3 drops or can be diluted in carrier oil and rubbed on soles of feet and lung area
  • Eucalyptus Radiata – diffuse 2-3 drops or for children 2+ rub 1 drop on soles of feet. (will also help bring down a fever)
  • Lavender or Lavender Chamomile Blend – diffuse 2-3 drops, or rub 1 drop on soles of feet. Blends well with the other two oils.

Children 2+:

NO DIFFUSER? NO PROBLEM!
If you don’t own a diffuser for your essential oils, you might want to invest in one, they are about 50-65 dollars on amazon for a decent one. But if you can’t afford one or just don’t want one, you can just use the stove top method.

  1. Fill a large pot about 2/3 of the way with water.
  2. Bring to a boil.
  3. Add 2-4 drops oil.
  4. Breath in the lovely steam.

It is advised to not let children get close to the pot. Simply being in the kitchen will allow them to breath in the oils. You could also get the shower steamy and add the oils and sit in the bathroom with your child or infant and let them breath in the steam for 20-30 minutes. ( I have used this method a lot with both of my children and it works wonders on congestion and colds)

BONUS # 3 – Cleanliness tips for cold and flu season

KEEP YOUR HANDS WASHED!

Regular soap and warm water will do just fine! If you are out and about without a way to wash your hands DO NOT USE ALCOHOL or TRICLOSAN BASED SANITIZER! You can simply make your own or use a reputable natural product brand such as Youngevity’s PureWorks brand.

Homemade Sanitizer Recipe: “Lea’s Safe No-Germ Hand Spray”
From NourishingTreasures.com

Add together in 16 oz spray bottle (I used the one-finger pump kind) the following…

8 oz (1 cup) water
4 oz (1/2 cup) aloe vera concentrate (not the gel)
2 oz (1/4 cup) olive oil (or almond, avocado, or jojoba)
15 drops Tea Tree Oil
20 drops Orange Essential Oil
I like the aroma of the orange EO, but feel free to swap it out for another scent you like.

I have a small 2 oz fingertip sprayer that I got right at Walmart. I keep this in my purse so when we’re out shopping or after the kids activities I can give the kids a spay-down when we get into the car. It’s become a good habit. Why not make it yours too?

Conclusion

The cold and flu season happens every year. If you’ve read this, you now know what the best and worst foods for cold and flu season are, as well as what supplements, essential oils, and daily practices can make the difference between SIB (sick-in-bed) and HAH (happy and healthy).  Your body’s immune system is amazing, but its effectiveness really depends on how you treat it. Just like a car that is not maintained will likely fall apart, we have to take awesome care of the machine we call our body.

“Natural Food”, False Advertising and Chobani Yogurt.

natural-food-fake-advertisingBeware of the “Natural” label on foods!

Not only is it misleading but it is a down right lie and what I am about to share with you will make you furious!  The “Natural Effect” as some call it, is false advertising at its finest. Have you been hoodwinked, scammed, bamboozled? I will admit that I have, and its why I continue to share this type of information as far as I can.  I recently watched a video (see below) that discusses the topic of false advertising in “natural food’ labels in a humorous way while at the same time distressing you. The video points out that even though a food item is labeled “natural” or “100% natural” or “all-natural”  it can still contain GMOs, antibiotics, chemicals, hormones, harmful preservatives and HFCS.

Here’s one very REAL and RELEVANT example of “natural food” false advertising: Chobani yogurt.

Read what happened to my wife Nicole:

chobani-natural-food-false-advertisingI tend to be in a rush in the mornings and so I am guilty of buying the Chobani flip yogurt with blueberries, chia, hemp and walnuts for a quick grab breakfast. Sounds healthy right? That’s not even mentioning the claim on the label that it “contains only natural ingredients!” Even when looking at the list of ingredients a bit closer (I’m a pretty avid label reader!) it looks to be true. Unfortunately, its not! I recently ran across an article in Time magazine stating that Whole Foods is ridding its stores of Chobani brand yogurt due to the use of milk that contains GMOs. Yes, that is right! GMO containing milk. GAAAAAAAAG!  I just ate it this morning. Bamboozeled!  Needless to say I will have to get over my laziness and get up a few minutes earlier in order to make the same tasty breakfast with my raspberry Beyond Organic Amasai instead.  Lesson learned! The safest option if you are concerned about the harmful effects of GMOs, growth hormones, antibiotics etc…is to choose foods with the USDA Organic label!

"only natural ingredients"

9-Year-Old Girl Scolds McDonald’s CEO

Three 90’s style words for 9-Year-old, Hannah Robertson: “You go girl!”

9-year-old-girl-scolds-mcdonalds-ceoAt a recent Mcdonalds’ shareholder meeting regarding martketing towards children, Hannah had no trouble letting her mind be known, “It would be nice if you stopped trying to trick kids into wanting to eat your food all the time,” Hannah, who is in the fourth grade, went on to say. “I make cooking videos with my mom that show kids that eating healthy can be fun and yummy. We teach them that eating a rainbow of fruits and veggies makes kids healthier, smarter and happier because that is the truth.”

Your closing response was less than easy for the standing CEO, “Mr. Thompson, don’t you want kids to be healthy so they can live a long and happy life?”

“First off, we don’t sell junk food, Hannah,” Thompson replied, “My kids also eat McDonald’s. When they were about your size, to my son who is with us today, who was a little bit bigger, he was a football player, and also they cook with me at home. I love to cook. We cook a lot of fruits and veggies at home.”

“Food” – A Century Old American Proverb

Here’s a very cool informative graphic from information in 1917 about food. It’s a century old food proverb that is still relevant today. It looks like the U.S. had some more sense back then, before being overrun by the Mcdonalds, Perdue, and Monsantos’ of the world. Thanks Samantha for this.

PGPR in my CHOCOLATE BAR!

My beautiful wife Nicole (who happens to be eight months pregnant) wrote this and I thought it would be a perfect guest blog post for Try Living Organic.  Sugary cravings are a serious issue in most people’s lives and there are real dangers when we eat blindly.  Always check the ingredients list. Please take three minutes and read my wonderful wife Nicole’s post.  -Paul Martinez

Vending Machine MadnessLet’s talk about CHOCOLATE!

This is one of my biggest cravings! After lunch today I began to have an intense craving for chocolate. Unfortunately, I was in a rush this morning and forgot to swipe a Beyond Organic chocolate bar from the fridge. This is my go-to craving stopper! Not only is this delicious little bar organic it is also packed full of antioxidants, omega 3’s and probiotics!
I just couldn’t resist the urge to have some chocolate, so I decided to grab something sweet from the vending machine. It took me a few minutes to decide which refined sugar, artificially flavored, preservative laden goodie dangling before me I was going to pick. I tried to be very thoughtful of my choice…Snickers…no…peanut intolerant, Mars….mmmmm….too much HFCS,  cookies….nah…too many ingredients I can’t pronounce. There it is! A Hershey’s milk chocolate with almonds bar! The lesser of two evils right? How bad could it be? Continue reading

Merry Christmas from the FDA: GM Salmon gets Thumbs up!

How GM Salmon is Engineered

How GM Salmon is Engineered

Frankenfish

Frankenfish Movie DVD Cover 🙂

It’s official: the FDA has declared salmon frankenfish #705 [not official name] good enough to put on your dinner table.  Scientists have found a way to genetically modify (GM) salmon to grow twice as fast using a gene from two other fish.  The FDA could not find any valid scientific reasons to ban the production and on Friday concluded that the fish “will not have any significant impacts on the quality of the human environment of the United States.” Regulators also said that the fish is unlikely to harm populations of natural salmon, a key concern for environmental activists.

Supporters of this new technology believe the genetically modified salmon will make it not only easier and cheaper to produce farmed salmon, but that it wouldn’t harm wildlife since they can be grown on land-based fish farms.

There are critics however to this jolly experiment . While they have not been set into mass production/distribution just yet, a few naturalists smell something fishy. Here are some key problems the these GM Fish would bring to humanity:

  1. Interbreeding (like GM crops are doing) can cause devastation to the natural salmon and other fish and animals in the food chain. Of course the FDA says this is unlikely, but they probably said that about Roundup Ready Soybeans too.
  2. GM meat could cause new food allergies the same way we’ve found new allergies in GM crops.
  3. If this gets fully approved, it could be a slippery slope to elephant-pig-goose-cattle.
  4. People who disagree with the technology will have no way of knowing whether the meat is GMO or not because labeling laws have not passed. (Thanks California)
  5. This would put already suffering fishermen into unemployment because giant agribusiness would have control of production decimating the competition from wild salmon or the like.
Here are some comments I’ve quoted from around the web regarding this news:

Brer_Orabbit “It won’t get only my family table – that’s for sure.”

Steve Hill – “Since the world shows no appetite for stopping breeding people, and food prices are spiralling as a direct consequence, we are going to HAVE to embrace developments like this to provide basic food security to people. Of course it should be carefully researched, tested, licensed, regulated, and everything else. Much of the world’s soya is already GM, and drought-resistant grains including rice are also proving lifesavers.”

IAMBCPENTAMASTR – “On this matter I’ll try to be brief / Cheap protein is hunger relief / While salmon’s good fish / You know what I wish / Let’s double the size of the beef.”

CHRIS DEES – “GMO grain is a total nightmare. Fiddling with animals is even worse, this will not end well..”

What do YOU think? Will you be eating GM Salmon Experiment #705?

Obesity Worldwide #Infographic

One thing in this infographic that really struck me was the statistic that 74.1% Of America is overweight!  (not obese but overweight) I wonder if a similar statistic could be said of Americans who are “unhealthy.”

A recent Consumer Reports survey of 1,234 U.S. adults, had these results: 90% of American’s think they are unhealthy. However, in this same survey, 89.7 percent of Americans described their diet as “somewhat” (52.6 percent), “very” (31.5 percent), or “extremely” (5.6 percent) healthy.  Something is not adding up. Education is key. Continue reading
