Hotdogs and Bacon and Cancer Oh My!!

Thank you : http://www.flickr.com/photos/blake/Its official: A link between eating processed meat, such as bacon or sausages, and pancreatic cancer has been shown by researchers. This is just one of many studies linking processed meats to many different types of cancers additionally including colorectal cancer, leukemia. Reason number ONE: Nitrites & Nitrates!

HEY WAIT! Don’t just take my word for it:

  • Read about BBC News’ take on it here.
  • See “Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine’s” Good Medicine article here.
  • Cancer Prevention Coalition talks about it too, here.

That’s just getting started just google “processed meat cancer” and you’ll be amazed at how many articles are just now being written while schools are still serving thousands of processed hotdogs and meat to our young ones everyday.

The main study was published in the British Journal of Cancer and they found that eating processed meats such as bacon, sausage, salami, pepperoni and hotdogs increases your risk for developing pancreatic cancer  by 19 percent for every 50 grams of processed meat you consume.  What’s crazy about that one sausage link constitutes about 50+ grams.

The World Cancer Research Fund has advised people to completely avoid processed meat. The nitrates used for preserving these types of meats convert into nitrosamines which has been linked to a number of cancers.  It gets worse, processed meats with nitrites are shown to increase your risk of :

  • Bladder cancer by 59 percent
  • Colon cancer by 59 percent
  • Stomach cancer by 38 percent
  • Pancreatic Cancer by 67 percent (one of the worse cancers!)

BUT WHAT IF I LIKE HOTDOGS!?

Whats the solution?

First of all, now that you know these startling facts, tell everyone you know. Educate your children, even if they are adults. This information can literally save their life!

Secondly, stop eating processed foods altogether. Learn more about what you are eating. Some of it really isn’t food at all. If you absolutely cannot live without, look for alternatives to things like bacon – There is such thing as “fakin bacon” made from soy. (make sure its organic) See below for alternative to traditional hotdogs.

Third, reach out and invest in good companies that strive to feed our families the best whole natural and organic food and beverages. The type of companies that avoid carcinogens like the plague (Carcinogen – A substance capable of causing cancer in living tissue.) – In my opinion should be called Car-SIN-ogen! :) Learn about the chemicals they put in potatoes here.

I know of an amazing company called Beyond Organic that actually sells all beef hotdogs and they are completely natural, ORGANIC, absolutely no preservatives of any kind. They are delicious and come from 100% all grass (and green forage) fed cows. They are very very lean and you can feel proud to feed them to your kids.  I trust them.  Learn more or get your own 100% organic beef hotdogs: Beyond Organic GreenFinished Beef Hotdogs

TigerWhen these types of studies come out. Its imperative that we as consumers do not keep making the same mistakes.  When you see something deadly like a lion, tiger, or a bear approaching you,  you don’t sit there and try to cuddle it.  YOU RUN! Same goes to foods that are deadly, run from them and never look back. Your health, life, and family depend on it.
